SPEAKER: Minister Michelle O'Byrne,

GENERAL DISCUSSION:  Tasmanian Health Care System.

The recurring theme in Michelle O'Byrne's adult life has been that of helping working-class people and those less fortunate in the community.  Michelle began her working life as an organiser for the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union.  She managed a job skills program for long-term unemployed people for three years and, in 1996, she began working as an electorate officer to Senator Kerry O'Brien. 

In 1998, Michelle was elected Federal Member for Bass, increasing her majority in 2001 and serving until 2004.  Michelle served as Federal Labor's Parliamentary Secretary for Communications and was also the national co convener of Emily's List.   Michelle was elected as the State Labor Member for Bass on 18 March, 2006.  When first elected, Michelle served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier.  From October, 2006 until February, 2008, Michelle served as Minister for Community Development, Minister assisting the Premier on Local Government and Minister responsible for Sport and Recreation.  Michelle's role as Minister for Community Development enabled her to work closely with her portfolio areas of Aboriginal Affairs, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors Bureau, Youth Affairs, Disability Bureau and Women Tas on issues that are close to her.   Michelle's vision is for a Tasmania that embraces everybody, irrespective of their circumstances, background or culture. 

In February, 2008, she was appointed Minister for the Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts and Minister for Sport and Recreation.  In September 2008, Michelle was also appointed Minister for Tourism in the new Bartlett Government.  Following the 2010 State election, Michelle now has the responsibility of the Health and Tourism portfolios.

State Medical Director - Dr Andrew Turner

Dr Turner has been Director Department of Critical Care Medicine at Royal Hobart Hospital since 2007, Honorary Treasurer of the Australia and New Zealand Intensive Care Society since 2002, Intensive Care Foundation Trustee/Director since 2005 and is a clinical lecturer at the University of Tasmania. He feels strongly that intensive care is a wonderful profession, and hopes to attract medical students to the field and to training at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

 

Dr Turner has an interest in research and evidence-based medicine, having spent several years on the Executive of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group and has acted as the Principal Investigator in numerous studies conducted at the Royal Hobart Hospital. Previously he was Director of Intern Training for five years and the Director of the Division of Medicine at Royal Hobart Hospital for three years.

Dr Turner started his medical training at the University of Tasmania and began specialising in intensive care medicine in 1993. His training continued at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne and he became a specialist at the Royal Hobart Hospital in 1998. Dr Turner enjoys caring for the high end of patient acuity and the camaraderie of a tight-knit intensive care team. Dr Turner hopes to maintain the very highest level of patient care, and he is looking at ways to increase cooperation with the university

Guest Speaker this month Lisa Wardlaw-Kelly: Tasmanian State Manager Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agencyon Transition to the new National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.  

Lisa Wardlaw-Kelly joins AHPRA from her recent position as the Tasmanian Regional Director of the Australian Bureau of Statistics where she managed a busy office with responsibility for a range of national surveys and state-based statistical programs. As ABS Tasmanian Regional Director, Lisa was also the Tasmanian State Government Statistician and participated on a number of high level bodies including the Treasurer's Demographic Change Advisory Council and the Stronger Communities Taskforce. Lisa commenced in the Australian Public Service as a graduate in 1994 and has since held a variety of policy and program management roles predominantly within the health portfolio. Lisa's previous experience includes managing the consumer health information portal HealthInsite, and she has also held key roles in a number of National Health Priority Areas, and in the area of evidence based healthcare policy.  

From 2004-2006 Lisa was Tasmanian State Manager of the Department of Health and Ageing, where she oversaw the delivery of a range of Australian Government health programs in Tasmania, including regulatory and planning functions relating to aged and community care, as well as the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, primary care and rural health programs.
